I think that's because some artists today use certain parts from old songs. Like my mom will always say "Hey, they took this part of the song from this one 80s song that I loved!"
never said it was mainstream music i said new songs. And besides, your living on an island of denial if your going to make the argument that indie bands don't borrow styles from each other. because they do.
I have no clue why, but when I first heard Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye I thought it was an old song from the 80s. Just the sound of it made me think it was older, maybe because it's different than what's normally played on the radio? I don't know, but I was trying to figure out if it was some kind of new obsession that everyone was discovering and that's why it was being played on a popular music radio station.
Well a lot of artists release songs as singles after the song had been available for a while. That happened to me with She Wolf and no one believed me when I said I truly had heard the song the summer before. Just because it's labeled new doesn't make it new
