+46 All politicians seem to talk about is the middle class - how much they're suffering, how protecting them should be our #1 priority, how they should get the most tax breaks, etc. It would be helpful if they talked about the lower/working class, amirite?

They aren't necessarily talking about the people in the middle class so much as the idea of a middle class. Expanding the middle class would theoretically shrink the group of citizens in poverty.

Although I agree, the only thing politicians seek out to provide for are the upper and middle classes, solely because they represent a great majority of their votes. The upper class because they have a large influence, and the middle because they represent most of the USA. Lower class is often ignored due to their lack of power and influence over everyone else, and are pushed aside. That's a terrible way to do it, personally. I believe tax payment should be determined by your income (the greater it is, the higher your tax payment) and that the lower classes should have access to programs that can help them kick off the ground, because not everyone is a crack addict, and even if they are, they normally want to stop doing crack. If that happens and the lower class is abolished and are brought up to what is now the middle class, machinery might finally replace the more menial jobs that the lower class used to employ themselves into and make the job quicker, and the now middle and upper classes can receive more well-paying jobs so long as there are enough jobs for the more well-paying ones. ...Well, in theory...more like in thesis.

Obama hasn't talked about the lower class lately because he knows he has their vote already.

Working class = Middle Income.

And also- lower-income doesn't need tax relief- they get a refund.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

So the middle class doesn't work? Since they aren't part of the working class.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Because the lower class is already getting all kinds of government funding. If they grow the middle working class, then in theory the lower class would shrink because they would then move into the middle working class, and wouldn't need to rely on the government so much.

middle class is practically lower class. Mitt Romney said that anyone making 250,000 is middle class. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/14/romney-middle-income_n_1883819.html So that means that the majority of Americans to him are lower class. Plus the whole recession/housing bubble crash expanded the difference between the rich and the poor dramatically to the point where in the near future if the economy isn't fixed there won't be a middle class anymore.

Oh thanks so much for that fact, it's really interesting! (No sarcasm). So it makes a little more sense when he was talking about his plan for the middle class, and it was totally different from what he was saying before, because he has a different definition.
