+61 Selfishness in itself is not necessarily a bad trait, amirite?

I was reading an article my Buddhist friend posted about the belief there is no such thing as a truly selfless act. Give money to a hobo? Makes you feel good. If it wasn't for your own emotional response toward your kind act, the kind act wouldn't be committed.

Hmm...there was a long comment thread where I explained my reasoning behind this, but the original author deleted it. In summary, basically, I think selfishness is imperative to survival. Eating more than your share? Selfishness. Wanting a job that makes more money that you need? Selfishness. I don't believe selfishness can be blamed because it's just a person ensuring their own survival.
