+151 I want to be a video game programmer when I grow up, but in order to get a Computer Programming degree in college, I have to take Spanish, Russian Film, English Composition, Poetry, and Chemistry. This is ridiculous. Degrees shouldn't have so many irrelevant requirements, amirite?

Have to love one-size-fits-all regulations

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yeah I'm SURE Russian film is the absolute only class you can take to fulfill the requirement...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

ALL of the other classes for this requirement are just as irrelevant.

I hear you. Struggling through English composition and western civilization as a piano major. What's worse is my western civilization teacher is extremely biased.

I went to college for music production and had to take a class called History of Modern China. It was awful.

some undergrad degrees are general with more classes in the major and minor area I think masters and up is more specific

by Anonymous 11 years ago

For your BS they have to be general. It sucks yea. Like my friend is a psych major and she istaking physics right now. It doesn't make any sense, but it's to be general. If you go higher up to like a doctorate, the classes get really specified to your major.

It's nice to be well rounded though. I mean, most likely, you're not going to take those classes on your own so in a way it's nice to gain more knowledge outside your field...but then again, it's kind of stupid.

Except for chem and spanish, I could see how all of those could apply (in the liberal arts sense). Russian film might not apply directly to code, but to creative design. Same for poetry. And everyone has to take english comp in some form, otherwise you wouldn't be able to write/communicate effectively for things like getting grants or funding or whatnot. Plus, everyone should be able to communicate well in the most common language of their country.

Are those courses specifically required, or do they just fill requirements (like foreign language)? Also, are they for computer programming, or your Bachelor's?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

they fill requirements and bachelor's. it's still ridiculous.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

In Britain it's much more specific. My course is French and Spanish, and that's all i do.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Believe me. Once you get to Data Structures, you're going to thank Zeus for all those filthy liberal arts courses you had to take.

I had the luck to be able to become a computer programmer without any degree - I got trained at the company I work at. It's quicker, you learn only relevant things AND you get paid!

You probably can be aswell, I'm pretty sure my company isn't unique in this!
