Since when are the two mutually exclusive?

I'm not saying you can never have both, just in some instances it'd have to be one or the other. For example, I used to be pretty quiet but now I'm more outgoing and generally well-liked, but aren't taken as seriously as before.

Taken seriously and well-respected are not the same, though. Why not be outgoing, but still in such a way that people respect you as well?

That's my point; that kind of thing is really hard to attain, so most people would have to choose between the two. Of course I'd rather have both, though.

I disagree that it has to be a choice between the two, so we will just have to agree to disagree. I think that you should continue to be outgoing, and if you hold yourself to a certain standard at the same time, people will respect you too! :)
