They close at the same speed, but you can make them close sooner. Like when you open the door for someone, you don't want to wait a few seconds for the auto close so you press the button to skip that time.

Yeah if you hold down the close and a floor number at the same time, it's an express trip to that floor. That's the one for police and firemen.

Anyhow, i think it varies on the elevator because i've gotten curious and timed the one at my office, to my dismay it did nothing. I know if i made elevators i definitely would make a placebo one.
