That said though, I continually have a hard time dealing with my peers whom I really respect and admire; as OP said before, there's a difference (and a very fine line) between respecting people and idolizing them. :/ I have gotten better with it though.

I absolutely idolize the scientists who take everything we think we know about the Universe and tell it to go fuck itself.
Human beings used to think everything was made up of air, earth, water, and fire. Nowadays, human beings can create new elements. Scientists have sculpted the world as we know it, and if it weren't for them, we'd still all be cave-men. If they don't deserve to be idolized for everything they've done to make the world what it is, then I don't want to be here.

There is a difference between being respected/honored and idolized
by Anonymous11 years ago
Why the fuck CAN'T we idolize them?

ARE YOU SHITTING ME. YOU CAN'T CURSE ANYMORE
by Anonymous11 years ago
I think what they deserve goes so far beyond respect. Idolization is the only thing I can describe it as. It seems the message of this post is "we're all human", and I can agree that we are all human. However, there are vast differences between humans. What we //could// do is insignificant compared to what we //actually// do. Also, it doesn't help that some people are simply born smarter or stronger than others. Even though we are all human, we don't all have the same capabilities. We //are// all human, but that doesn't mean anything at the end of the day. Nikola Tesla will forever be more important than anyone else from his time period who contributed nothing to society.

I agree with what you're saying, I just don't think "idolization" is a proper term to describe it. The respect and honor they deserve far exceeds someone who made far less of their potential, but you must first reflect on what it means, and according to dictionaries, an idol is:
1. An image used as an object of worship
2. A false god
3. One that is adored, often blindly or excessively
4. Something visible but without substance
These all circulate around making an imperfect truth (a real person, no matter how great) into something perfect (a deity worthy of worshipping/judging by a single act).
Honoring someone refers to simply acknowledging all the good they did, respecting it, making a good example of it, and bringing them (possibly but not necessarily) glory and fame for it

I think at the time, idolizing Gandhi would be a good thing to do. I guess now the Dalai Lama would be acceptable.
by Anonymous11 years ago
I disagree, because idolizing him would make him be seen as a godly figure. If we do that, people start to think he was different from the rest of us, and forget that they can be just like him because he was human too

Fine. What about Buddha? People worshipping has done a lot of good. I mean, no one hates Buddhists out of all the religions. They're just... chill.
by Anonymous11 years ago
I don't know enough Buddhists to make a case for them, sorry. Anything I said about them would be without a source, and an assumption. I only know one person who is Buddhist
by Anonymous11 years ago
Buddha told people not to worship/idolize him though.
by Anonymous11 years ago
I agree unless I'm the one being idolized/worshiped.
