+14 Smoking should be made illegal, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

everything should be legal as long as it doesnt come in conflict with other ppl. do what you do as long as you dont bother others....if you want shoot smack but dont do it publicly and dont get others to try it. this is how i see it.

Indeed. Do what you want, so long as it doesn't hurt someone else's being or someone else's property. Directly. Hand-in-hand with this idea is that people need to take personal responsibility for their actions. If someone chooses to smoke and ends up with lung cancer, that's the chance they took... I shouldn't be forced to pay for this.

if you smoke in public you are damaging their health and that is kind of bothering them

Your post does not say "in public" though.

I think it should be illegal. The people who want to will still get black market cigarettes, but they won't smoke in public. But that would take away jobs and tax revenue. The best solution is to lower tax on cigarettes, but build ventilated glass enclosures which are the only places you can smoke, ever, and you have to pay to use them.

I don't think it should be made illegal all together, but maybe just in all public areas. People should only be able to smoke in their homes and cars. That way, it will only affect them, and maybe their family. If they want to be considerate of their family, they will try to quit.

It should be illegal for non smokers to air their views on smoking.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yeah and it should be illegal for people who aren't drunk to air their views on drinking. It should be illegal for non-pregnant people to air their views on abortion. I agree because fuck logic ono

You applied the context to a controversial situation and therefore your analogies don't make any sense to the argument. If you'd maintained the same line of thought it would be: People who don't drink shouldn't air views on drinking. People who have never been pregnant shouldn't air views on pregnancy.

I believe people can do whatever they want to themselves as long as it is not harming anyone else. For example, I support the ban on cigarettes in public places such as restaurants and bars (with the exception of a "Smoking Only" area). I don't believe alcohol should be illegal either, but of course drinking and driving is a crime. Anything that puts other people in harm's way should be illegal. However, smokers know that what they are doing is harmful to their health. They should still be allowed to do it for personal use. The government should not intervene with personal freedoms unless they put other people in danger. Same goes for marijuana and other psychedelics (unless you are driving or otherwise doing something potentially dangerous to others).

as if there arent enough victimless crimes...smh

Two of my grandparents have died from lung cancer because they smoked for so long, so trust me when I say that I hate when people smoke. But that still doesn't give us the right to make it illegal. So many people would lose jobs, first of all. And it's a right that people have to do what they want. If someone is smoking on the street, of course I don't wanna be breathing in that smoke, but I can just avoid them. It's a person's choice.
