+61 It's unexpected when a very true and wise quote comes from a historic figure you previously thought had impacted the world negatively, amirite?

The converse can be true as well... "If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union." -- Abraham Lincoln

hmm, interesting. i never knew that

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It is a grave misconception that president Lincoln was actively working to free slaves. Although, I still like to believe it...because he is my favorite president.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Maybe, maybe not. But he was the leader of the party formed to abolish slavery, he did give the Emancipation Proclamation, and he did push for the 13th Amendment... so it's not like he didn't care

by Anonymous 11 years ago

He DID abolish it, but he wasn't as passionate about it as most think.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Oh. Still, how much more passionate do people want him to be? I see him as a realist, I guess. He knew what it would realistically take to get the job done and did it, which is fine with me. And like all Presidents he had a lot on his plate

by Anonymous 11 years ago

True, which is why he is still my favorite president. The fact that he wasn't as adamant as people think he was the abolish slavery doesn't mean he wasn't an amzing man.

However, he was quite passionate about vampire hunting.

I remember talking about that in History of the Americas. Lincoln didn't actually believe that blacks were equal to whites and he wrote the EP for political reasons to protect the Union. It really made me think about how I viewed him. Cool stuff, that history is.

It works the other way around too, like finding out that Gandhi beat his wife.

Any examples that aren't the opposite?
