It's because masculine traits are seen as better than feminine ones. From the time we're little girls are taught that it's cool it is to be a tom boy, boys aren't taught the opposite. Pass times like sports are seen as legitimate while pass times like putting on make up are seen as frivolous. Society looks down on femininity.

I agree, although I don't see sports and makeup as opposite "pastimes".
