+57 Why would you ever put someone else in control of how much you respect yourself, or try to put yourself in control of how much someone else respects themselves? Don't grab someone else's steering wheel, because then you end up letting go of yours, amirite?

I agree with Len that the steering wheel analogy is good, but doesn't really apply to the initial sentiments. I'd say the steering wheel thing applies more to situations where people are attempting to control your direction and career etc, rather than how you feel about yourself. Also, with regards to that, I don't think many people do what you say here voluntarily. I think for most it's almost like a reflex.

But its still people can change about themselves. And by making others more insecure, I think it makes yourself insecure as well

Sure, but the steering wheel analogy doesn't work for me in this instance. The steering wheel is a control mechanism for direction, I just don't see how it works as an analogy for self respect. See what I mean? I just think you've mashed two differing sentiments together (allbeit inadvertently) - and I agree with both anyway...so...haha

Oh, I know what you mean now. It can work though, if looked at the right way, but its not perfect for the scenario

I just think the "wheel" is too much a metaphor for controlling where we go, rather than who we are.

That's true
