+61 It really sucks that it is impossible to get to the center of the earth. I mean, it would be awesome actually seeing with your own eyes what is actually down there instead of just speculating, amirite?

It's not impossible, just so ridiculously expensive that no country in the right mind would bother trying.

Considering the intense heat, the confusing gravity based there, and the fact the core is solid metal.

Diamond everything. We have enough carbon to make it. Tunnels with supports to get the magma out of the way, Liquid nitrogen pumped at incredible speed through the whole structure to come out the other side and replaced. Then dig a section out of the core and drop a heavily insulated capsule into it from the end of the tunnel using an air lock like system and computer targeting. Another tunnel in the solid inner core allows a drop into a cavern in the very centre where there's no gravity.

Why diamond?

High melting point, easily holds up against pressure in the right structure. Actually, I think some fullerenes like nano tubes would work better...

Then think of the damage this would do to our planet if we listened to B10ckH34d.
