Some make that comparison so you can put your issue into perspective, which can potentially make you feel better. It depends on how you interpret "others are worse off." If you interpret it as the speaker belittling you, you might feel worse. If it puts things in perspective, you may feel more in control of the issue, and in turn, feel better, amirite?

Yes, but knowing that thousands of people on this planet are suffering and worse off than me, in addition to the fact that I feel like crap, makes me feel even more out of control.
