+51 Sometimes, when people say others are worse off, it's not to belittle your emotions or to make you feel as if your problems aren't important. Some make that comparison so you can put your issue into perspective, which can potentially make you feel better. It depends on how you interpret "others are worse off." If you interpret it as the speaker belittling you, you might feel worse. If it puts things in perspective, you may feel more in control of the issue, and in turn, feel better, amirite?

It usually makes me feel worse because I begin feeling bad for the people worse off than me.

that makes sense but to clarify I said that control of the issue makes you feel better

Yes, but knowing that thousands of people on this planet are suffering and worse off than me, in addition to the fact that I feel like crap, makes me feel even more out of control.

It makes me feel better when I tell myself this, opposed to someone else telling me this.
