+92 If each of us gave generously of our time and money to charity and congratulated and elevated those who do instead of gangster rappers and charismatic politicians; our civilization would be more like what we claim we desire. Amirite?

I like gangsta rap and charisma... I would like to keep them alive even though gangsta rap is somewhat dying or dead.

Not all "gangster rappers" are bad people, some of them are actually philanthropists and activists. If perhaps you mean to say people who should hold no importance in society, like models, porn stars and/or athletes, them maybe I'd agree with you.

The way I interpret it is why give your money to a third party when you could directly allocate it towards the cause yourself? Instead of praising the rap artist because they donate to a certain charity, why not donate to the charity yourself? Instead of giving your money to a government official to allocate the funds wherever the official desires, why not allocate your own money towards what you desire? OP's saying we should praise the average Joe for making an effort to help others rather than praise the third party we're giving money to. When I go out and help another person, I may get self-satisfaction but I get no recognition from society. If more people obtained recognition for the help they did, maybe more people would help. I don't necessarily think recognition is deserved but it can provide an incentive for those with the attitude of "well I can't make a difference."

I interpreted it as, you are represented by the people we give money to, so instead of wanting to tear down misogyny, racism, poverty, bigotry...etc. we do it ourselves instead of funding those who continue to perpetuate these ideologies. So if we stopped paying misogynistic people like tiger woods then perhaps we could send the message that we deem this action unacceptable.

What about misandry? (just nitpicking)

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Oh of course! I was simply using examples and I think we can agree that misogyny is much more prevalent and popular then misandry

by Anonymous 11 years ago

More prevalent and popular? Maybe. //Much// more? I'm kinda doubting it. But nevertheless, both exist.

Much much much much much more. If I asked you to find me one song that objectified women you probably already have one in your head, now can you do the same with men?
