I know if I told him he'd do it because he's not one to make confrontation just like me and he's a nice guy. Rather than tell him, I've always just went ahead and cleaned them despite him saying, "hey man, you didn't have to do that." hoping he would get the hint without me telling him. I've had other roommates before who didn't seem to learn how to do dishes and when confronted about it they'd get all pissed.

well this one person said he would just put the dishes on his roommate's bed and the other guy eventually got the picture he didn't do it with just the dishes it was anything that was not in place clothes food trash all was put on the other guy's bed
