how come there's a "Middle East" and no "Middle west"?! amirite?
by Anonymous13 years ago
Isn't there a midwest in the US? We're western..so..there is yeah?

Middle west would be the Atlantic. So the fishes are middle westerners
by Anonymous13 years ago
Why would it be in the Atlantic when the middle of the Western Hemisphere is in the Americas?
by Anonymous13 years ago
Because the UK is also considered the west, so basically between America and the UK
by Anonymous13 years ago
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the U.K. was in the eastern hemisphere ...
by Anonymous13 years ago
It is but it is considered "the western world"

East-side Reppin' ;)

Representin'.
ugh... You put the East side to shame. smh
by Anonymous13 years ago
You put yourself to shame. Only stupid people "shake their heads".
by Anonymous13 years ago
Duuuuuhhhh, ya think so?
I was shaking my hand like I do when I have to use the bathroom but I am too busy reading amirite posts. That is to say that my hand convulses violently about my wrist as my fore arm pivots along a single axis.

Middle east was referred to as that by the Europeans to differentiate them from Asians (Far East)
by Anonymous13 years ago
I live in the mid-west..
by Anonymous13 years ago
Me too :[
by Anonymous13 years ago
I don't. I just want to belong to something bigger than myself.

These terms were invented by Europeans, and so they considered Europe the centre. China/Japan was the furthest East they were aware of, so that became the Far East. Arabic countries were still to the East, but not as far away so they became the Middle East.
America wasn't even discovered until afterwards, but when it was it would have been the Far West as there were no continents further West on a flat map (though I don't think anyone ever actually used this term). Using this logic the Middle West would be the Atlantic Ocean.

Weeelll, It's called the Middle East because they used to go by where Rome was located. Everything East of Rome was, obviously, the East. So, there's the Middle and the Far East.
But when the America's were 'discovered' and the map was 'completed' they drew in the North-West Hemisphere and the South-West Hemisphere. The call the Middle slice of North America the Mid-West because it's in the middle of the Western Hemisphere, no longer in proportion to Rome.
***That's what people (Americans) mean when refering to 'Old Western' films.

I think the mid-west came from East coast Americans to refer to Americans living west of them but not as far as the West coast. But I could be wrong.
