-34 If a gun was put to your head, you would change ANY belief you hold dear or claim. Amirite?

by Anonymous 10 years ago

I would change mind for a ham sandwich and a cup of coffee, but I might change it back after a while.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

I wouldn't change the belief but only what I told them I believed. If pretending to be against something I'm actually for will save my life, then I have no problem with it. My beliefs are safe inside my head.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

And how would they know you were pretending?

by Anonymous 10 years ago

They wouldn't.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

So, my point is - if they were putting the gun to your head for something they specifically KNEW you believed or lived by, how could you fool or trick them?

by Anonymous 10 years ago

Lie. Pretend to understand and care for whatever belief they're trying to get me to believe; pretend to accept it. That sort of thing. To be honest, I don't see myself as being devote towards anything that would require me physically showing I'm against it... like I could see how it could be hard for a devout Catholic to throw his rosary on the ground and spit on it to prove he doesn't believe in it anymore. I can't really say I could do that as I am a non-practicing Catholic and desecration of a rosary has no effect on me. Someone who might give us some better insight would be fuzala and whether she could "prove" to the gunman she no longer has faith in Islam by defaming something of her faith that she actually holds sacred.

You might be able to SAY you had changed, but they would be able to watch you and see if you lived it. And yes, religion would be an obvious example, and that is why I said I was specifically not wanting the post to be about that. I have enough of those kinds of posts and comments. I wanted to just see in general what people thought about other areas of life.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

I assumed you meant like a one time only thing as in they point the gun to my head, tell me to believe something different, I agree, end of transaction. They go home thinking they changed a life. I go on a little confused, maybe scared, but ultimately unchanged.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

No, more of a "do or die" scenario really involving change.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

Oh. Well no, I wouldn't change being an individual. I'd rather be dead than give up my individuality anyway. Then, just to make it all a happy ending, I would persuade them to just give me the gun and let me shoot myself. Once the gun is in my hand, I use it against them.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

That is more of what I was driving at. Would we die over or for who and what we are.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

I think that I'd be willing to die for some of my beliefs. But I wouldn't be willing to sacrifice others, especially if they aren't consenting, for my beliefs (if a person said to change my beliefs or everyone in the area gets shot)

by Anonymous 10 years ago

So you would change //your// beliefs to keep everyone from getting shot?

by Anonymous 10 years ago

I think so, yes.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

Which beliefs do you hold so dear that you would be willing to die for? Just curious, if you are willing to share that with us...

by Anonymous 10 years ago

I would not rape or torture another human being. Even though it would be my fault (sort of) that the others and myself died, I couldn't individually deliver that kind of harm to someone.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

However, it's nearly impossible to know how I would react to a situation as utterly terrifying as that.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

Reminds me of http://www.amirite.com/181057 . I couldn't believe how many people disagreed.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

It's a difficult question to answer. I'm not sure we have any idea how brave and resolute we can be until we are pushed to our limits. I would like to believe that I would be willing to die for my beliefs in certain situations. For instance, if the gunman said chose between yourself or that child over there, I would be shamed for deciding to save myself. However, the gunman said you better start liking the New York Yankees, I think I could change.
