Example, 2013 NBA finals. People said the Miami heat almost lost the series. In sports , you are what you are and there's no such thing as almost losing. It's either a 'W' or 'L' that goes in the column

I think almost could be applied there. They were so close to losing but something happened that prevented that, and if that something didn't happen they would have lost. That's how I see it.
