but what if I'm naturally boring? I shouldn't embrace my naturally boring self? I wouldn't be myself if I tried to not be boring

by Anonymous 10 years ago

technically no one is naturally boring because different strokes for different folks so uniqueness is common

Studies show that children who are taught this lesson end up as less happy and less emotionally stable than children that are taught the value of positive peer pressure. And yes, positive peer pressure is totally a thing.

I suspect that it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Peer pressure exists so therefore people who heed it are happy people. If pressure to conform was not a "thing" than individualism would not make people feel unstable. It all goes back to judgement. "Judgement is very bad" (a wise man was thought to have said.)

It is a self fulfilling prophesy. It's a bit of a loop. I can't get a job beacuase I don't have any experience because I can't get a job. I imagine it as a Möbius strip, with a teeny little highway exit way disproportionate to the rest of the strip, making it difficult to get off on when you're driving along the Möbius strip in your magic car. It may be ideal if peer pressure didn't exist, but that is not how it currently is. A drop in the bucket is a fallacy, people encouraging kids to be individuals would help to get rid of peer standards. The thing is, it would not happen all at once, which still means that kids will be happier conforming to standards until enough time passes for the trend to spread and set in.

I agree the is this comment and still agree with the post. Ordinary is boring; people //should// embrace differences... and: kids are happier when they conform.

actually I was happier when I didn't conform and once I started to conform I was less confident and less sure of myself not saying conforming is bad just that there are a lot of factors involved

Studies don't have to fit for you specifically to be the general rule
