+5 Criminal history should not be accessible except to potential employers, and even then, only if it is deemed relevant to the job, amirite?

by Anonymous 9 years ago

It should not be a factor at all and it should be public knowledge with zero-shame attached.

Maybe in a perfect world it wouldn't be a factor and there would be zero shame attached. But the reality is when an employer has a few applicants and one has a misdemeanor or god forbid, a felony, they get tossed right in the trash

True and your OP stated your opinion on what "should" be, so I thought I would share may own. I prefer open information to closed. It "should" be open and unjudged. Not closed, and I don't like the idea of keeping it exclusive to potential employers, it should be open to anyone. That's my opinion anyways

Though I do think that there should be certain precautions. Maybe if you go a year or two without repeating the crime, it should disappear from your record except to relevant employers. In a perfect world, people would be more open-minded about those convicted of crime, but I reckon that in a perfect world, most people wouldn't be committing most of the crimes I'm thinking of.

You can get some things expunged from your record, however to do it costs a lot of money, so when a poorer individual can't find a job due to their record, where will they find the money to do that? Probably doing more illegal things

by Anonymous 10 years ago

Yeah that's why I meant for everyone for free

by Anonymous 10 years ago

That's an intriguing idea. Of course, such a things should exclude more serious crimes (probably most/all felonies and maybe some misdemeanors).

by Anonymous 10 years ago

I think non-violent crimes should definitely be expunged by default.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

And relevant as in jobs in security, or the government.

Then you go on a date with some person and they steal all your stuff because you didn't know they were convicted of burglary multiple times...

by Anonymous 10 years ago

Just because I killed a guy that ONE TIME, does not mean I can't serve coffee and doughnuts to other humans.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

No, anyone who might want to date you ought to have access to those records. If you have a criminal record, you need to always deal with the consequences if your actions. If you were wrongly convicted, get the record expunged.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

How does one do that?!

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Go to the courthouse and ask nicely.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

I'm a black male.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Does that mean you can't ask nicely?

by Anonymous 9 years ago

It means I can do anything and instantly get arrested lol

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Don't you think the person already dealt with the consequences when they paid the fine or went to jail?
