-4 Now that gay marriage is gaining momentum for acceptance in the US, the next issue we'll confront in the area of marriage is polygamy among consenting adults? Amirite?

by Anonymous 9 years ago

I agree, but I feel like the whole polygamy debate has already been discussed and the book's closed.

I think the debate occurred when women were really second-class citizens. Now, with equal rights, it might be worth revisiting. It wouldn't necessarily be one man, multiple wives. Who knows? Maybe not too many people will even be interested.

I wonder why some people who are pro-gay marriage are anti-polygamy it doesn't make sense to me because they both have similar arguments -consenting adults -personal/private -freedom of choice you get the gist of it maybe it has something to do with money and the legal benefits that come with it and/or it's not socially acceptable naturally, people don't want to "share" romantic/sexual connections I was watching polygamy in America documentaries they get married to multiple people anyways they just don't legalize they do a ceremony or whatever so they're married in a way that matters to them even if it's not recognized legally nonetheless polygamy doesn't float my boat

My only problem is cult religious groups who shelter their children away from society and force their children into polygamous relationships... and that's more a problem with those groups than the idea of polygamy in general.

yeah, that is a problem that one guy was jailed for forcing marriages and he still controls these people from jail His name is Warren Jeffs and he freaks me out

by Anonymous 9 years ago

He was who I was mainly thinking about :/ I feel so bad for those poor girls who grew up in that cult.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

I feel bad for the whole friggin' community I don't think they grow up developing properly mentally, physically, or otherwise you should see the "education" they get it's fabricated information and the kids do hard labor that Jeff guys controls when they get married, who they marry, etc. one guy escaped or whatever poor guy had to learn to read from the beginning (did a real number on him) and there was another piece on a women and her kids having to leave but the mother really wants to go back there I really hope she realizes that that's not a good idea the government can't touch them (pretty much) and they're all just stuck there escaping is almost futile I watch the documentary like it's a movie, and then, I remember it's all very real

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Yeah that's very true! Just because other members weren't sexually abused doesn't mean that they weren't still brainwashed and denied their freedom :(

by Anonymous 9 years ago

I want to emphasize that I was careful to use the words "consenting" and "adults" in my post. I'm against anything involving force or coercion, or involving minors.

Wasn't it a Mormon cult? Because I might have seen a documentary on it

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Mormons are stigmatized so I didn't mention because I didn't want more people to think ill of them People don't seem to understand that people are individuals

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Oh ok

by Anonymous 9 years ago

I don't think it will gain too much popularity unfortunately because there are far less people actively wanting their polygamous relationship to be legal than there are same sex couples wanting their relationship to be legal.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

I'd agree that it would be a small fraction of the population who might be interested, but I'd like them to have the freedom to choose that.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Yeah me too. People should be able to choose to marry more than one person if everyone in the marriage is ok with that.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

couldn't one go one step further and say "I don't need permission from my current spouse to get another spouse. I'm the one choosing to get married"

by Anonymous 9 years ago

No I don't think that's right or fair. Because the current spouse will be affected by a new one entering the marriage even if it's only financially.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Why is it illegal? That's so dumb
