All people should be given respect until they demonstrate that they don't deserve it. Elders should be given additional courtesy because they are generally more fragile. JMHO

it's weird, I understand this more as I get older ..only after you understand respect can you properly give it... but I think no authority should be assumed or any respect fronted... This blind faith in authority are words and ideas predators use... Adults would be wiser to give children respect then to expect it from them.
