+227 Why do we kill people who kill people to show people that killing people is wrong? amirite?

Are you watching 24?

I don't know if this is a reference, but do you want a murderer somewhere out there? How would you feel if someone you loved was taken away from you? You would want the person who took that life to suffer, right? Do murderers deserve to walk amongst decent people? Personally, if someone killed my best friends or family, I would want them to pay the ultimate price.

What if the murderer had a serious problem or mental issue and needed rehabilitation, as most do? What if the murderer had a family as well? What if your brother had a serious brother and killed someone, would you like to see him killed as well? What about the countless people american soldiers kill in wars? What is the difference between murder and war? Not to excuse murder, of course, and it surely deserves punishment, but have you ever considered it from the opposing family's point of view? Many killers have multiple personality disorders, and their 'true' personality actually wants to be caught and regrets the actions of the 'killer' personality. If your family was diagnosed with one of these, sure, they should be punished, but would you prefer rehabilitation and community service or to see your family killed before your own eyes because of a disorder?

I belive in that case the defendent would plead insanity and go to a correctional facility, not jail.

sometimes the world confuses me

Eye for an eye. Some people believe that people who kill deserve to die.

"An eye for an eye and the world goes blind."

Maybe it's not as simple as that. Maybe we kill only people who deserve to be killed for killing someone who didn't deserve it, to show you can't kill just anyone.

It's not that simple. Dead people can't kill innocent people. When you kill someone that commits genocide, he can't to that anymore. When you kill someone that wants to attack innocent people, he can't do that anymore. But I have to say that this doesn't mean you can go start a killingspree! Try to arrest them, and I've that ain't possible (a fight start or if you follow the law by the letter) you have to fight to stop them. And then they can get killed.

I know a lot of people won't agree with me, but usually if someone kills, whether it be by anger or planned out, they have a pretty big potential to do it again. Some people may not, if they killed someone who abused them they probably won't and in my opinion if that is the case the person should only get jail time. But people who kill and get put in jail, act all nice and good to get parole and out of their punishment. It isn't fair on the family who have lost an innocent loved one.

I don't think execution is a demonstration of how killing is wrong, but more of a demonstration of our society's intolerance for the murder of innocents and what we will do to those who do such a thing.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Exactly. We're not trying to show people anything, we are trying to discourage murder, and stop those committing it.

It's always confused me, but we can't just let them go free, and some people believe that murderers and rapists don't deserve anything from us. Why should our money pay for their food, shelter, and entertainment when we could use it for education or some such thing?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't think we do it to set an example out of them, I think we do it to punish them. I don't know about you, but before I knew anything about death row I still knew killing was wrong.

Sometimes, you have to kill someone guilty to protect innocent people.
