Hundreds of people could have predicted it. Species to species viral jump is well known to scientists, doctors, clinicians, etc...HIV jumped from monkeys to humans. Ebola jumped from fruit bats. Swine flu jumped from pigs. SARS jumped from bats to civets to humans. Avian influenza, aka bird flu, first jumped from birds to humans in the 1800s and has reappeared many times since.
