The expression "straight to hell" implies the existence of a roundabout way to hell, amirite?

Indeed. It's called Purgatory, and you go there if you were sort of bad but not totally evil, and from there either go to heaven or hell. Evil people would go straight to hell.

See you on the Highway, Mr. Scott.

Would that be the route paved with good intentions?

There is a roundabout way. Choose any place not on the straight route, such as Ipswich or oldham or whatever and go ti via that place.
Hey Presto. A roundabout route

I mean I think it's also saying "you're going to hell right now" instead of waiting until you die. Like I've mostly heard people use it like if you do that you're going to go straight to hell. Metaphorically of course
