It is quite probably actually. The universe has existed for 13B years. The earth/sun for 4B. It took almost the entire 4B years for us to form as a species. We've also been around on the order of 20,000-50,000 years give or take. And we've only developed wireless communication in the last 100 years. So it took 4B years for life to evolve to a point where we can communicate wirelessly. What are the odds that another species within 100 light years of us already has wireless communication? With climate change too we might be wiped out in a couple of centuries. It's almost certain that other intelligent life forms have arisen elsewhere. It's also almost certain that we'll never overlap.
