WTF with all the anons,
This is a great change to the potd schedule, I really like the political/lifestyle ones.
Yeah, I like the ones that cause big debates rather than just a joke with everyone posting jokes in their comments.
It's a controvesial topic
peoplethe don't want to take a hit for their opinions
This post isn't talking about what you would be more pleased to come face-to-face with...it's referring to how desensitized we all are to violence (thanks to media or w/e) versus to an issue that is so swept under the rug (gay rights). Why do you think Law and Order is so much more successful than Will and Grace?
This is actually something that kind of annoys me. Gay rights aren't "swept under the rug" It has grown to be one of the most important issues. Lots of media and celebrities are speaking out very loudly, in favor of gay rights. It is one of the most highly-puplicized issues, today. In fact, it is of such overwhelming importance a lot of other issues are being ignored.
I sweep a lot of things under my rug
That's not the best example because Will and Grace isn't that great a show.. Now The L Word is a good example :) But outside of that, you're right :)
I love The L Word :)
Wasn't it amazing?? Hated the ending though!
I wish it was still on :(
Yeah :( they should bring it back, it was left with an open enough ending to do it, or else make a film :)
That would be sweet!
maybe you mean as a country? Because I definitely feel more comfortable with gay guys than with men holding guns.
Unless he meant guys holding just hands, no person attached, which would make me a lot more uncomfortable.
Didn't want to exclude anyone not in my country.
On the agenda for today:
Violence in video games
No, you have to spell it "gey" or else it's offensive.
And key and kay!
You obviously haven't been here long enough.
Lol fags are gay
No, I'm pretty sure he was saying "Gay people are homosexual."
Or maybe he was saying cigarettes are happy.
Or maybe the cigarettes are happy and gay? He should be more specific.
I think he meant gays are fags.
either way the act of smoking is pretty homoerotic, even cigarettes themselves are a little phallic
ARE CIGARETTES CAPABLE OF FEELING EMOTION!?
he's gay, he can say say whatever he wants, same way, black people can say "nigger" and white people can't.
I'm black and I never use that word, which begs the question, are you?
i admit, no, i'm not, and just because you don't use the N -word doesn't other people don't as well, whenever I go to school, which is slowly becoming primarily black, i hear it at least ten times a day.
Then you shouldn't be using it, Not because it's "our word", but because it's offensive no matter who you are or how many times a day you hear it
i had a feeling this would be used against me, I am very sorry if I offended you, but in my defense I was using it as an example.
I don't mind gays or what they do as long as the sexual stuff is kept in the private of a bedroom. This DOES NOT mean straight couples are given a pass to be displaying affection physically constantly in public. I find both equally awkward.
Yeah, this is really what gay people want - consistency between the way same-sex and opposite-sex couples are treated and viewed. Like, I don't want to see a couple full-on making out in public either, gay or straight.
Precisely, I think both sides need a wake up call. There are people who do it on both sides and people who don't on both sides. Unfortunately the people that do do it stand out like a sore thumb.
I like how everyone is drawing a similar interpretation of the POTD being aboot general acceptance of homosexuality. Because two men would NEVER be capable of holding hands without being gay!
My dad held my hand when I was little and we crossed the street.
THAT IS DISGUSTING.
I don't really care about gays, not against them. I mean, if it doesn't bother my life in anyway, why should I care, amirite?
I'll drink to that.
Porque no los dos?
Lol, caught out Chauncy.
I'm not gonna lie, I've thought about posting a comment Anonymous and then replying to it, but then I'm like "nah, Anthony and Alex can see it".
I've thought about doing so, too. Then I think aboot deeper things in life, like the mortality rates of metamorphic rocks inhabiting the borders the volcanoes without proper permits...
Then I have dinner.
LOL, Chauncy fail
Chauncy never fails at being himself! Or... someone else?
You mean both holding hands and holding guns?
If by "take it as a challenge", you mean "cry myself to sleep at night after coming to grips with the fact that I have no friends in real life", then...
... I've located and destroyed all surveilance equipment you left in my house. Also, don't tell anyone about that thing in the bathtub with the beanies and the peanut butter.
no she means soft AND hard shelled tacos
Way to talk to yourself
"as a race..."?
Yeah, white people only, get out Mexican.
...get out a Mexican, and proceed to step six.
The human race is what I think they were going for.
As in the human race maybe?
I'd rather see two guys hold hands then hold guns.
My father and I disagree. I walked in on him yesterday watching two men holding each others guns... Oh wait.. One of my dads might be gay..
If you have two dads and no mom, where does your Jewish-ness come from?
the size of your dads' noses
I'm really hoping you meant than not then.
I suggested this for POTD. I feel so happy. :>
Were violent in nature. Were animals just like the rest of the creatures on earth. Also gay rights isnt put under the rug at all. Dont ask dont tell just got shot off the armys agenda.
I think that the "we're animals just like the rest" thing is a very stupid argument.
While it IS true that we're animals, we're not the kind of animals that crap on the ground and pee on things we want.
We're smart enough to actually think things through and create more.
We have basic needs and tendencies just like any other animal and to deny that is just foolish
"it IS true that we're animals"
And I'm saying that we can CONTROL them, where as other animals fight just in the presence of another animal.
We're, isn't, don't, army's
Thanks, the lack of apostrophes really made this comment unreadable.
Seriously though, why is it necessary for people to make comments like this just because the grammar used isn't impeccable, especially in cases where it isn't detrimental to the overall readability of the comment?
This doesn't point out any actual errors or strengths in his argument, all it does is attempt to make him foolish for no reason other than he didn't choose to hit the apostrophe key. There are some cases where do seem to genuinely misunderstand the rules of grammar, but most of the time it's just people choosing to type a little faster. It's really pretty bitchy to make a comment for the sole purpose of correcting extremely minor grammatical errors.
Maybe you could argue that the English language deserves those few extra seconds and shouldn't be shortened, but at the same time in your response you couldn't even be bothered to type out a complete sentence.
It confused me because I read it as were, and I don't have an opinion on the argument.
It's honestly not that big of a deal.
I don't feel leaving out apostrophes in a comment is a good enough reason to respond, honestly. I realize I'm overreacting, but this is something I see on amirite often enough that it builds up anger.
I find it really funny when all the comments in a discussion are voted down. It's like people aren't even taking sides at that point, they're just like 'You guys are cunts.'
We totally are
Gay people aren't bothering you...why bother them? Two men holding hands over two men holding guns ANY DAY.
on a side note i think there is a compatibility issue with amirite and opera mini web browser, my posts always get jacked up
I have the exact same problem using opera mini, several of my posts have sections repeated
sweet I'm not alone.
sentances get moved and repeated. it's really weird.
I guess it's not a huge deal considering there are many other browsers for android.
(even though opera mini is very fast in poor reception areas)
You know what I'd like to see, an app.deal considering there are many other browsers for android.
(even though opera mini is very fast in poor reception areas)
You know what I'd like to see, an app.
like it just inserted the word deal after app.
Personally, I'd like to see two gay guys holding hands and guns. That'd be pretty awesome
Very well put
I like the way it's put...
I'm personally not for or against gay rights, but I do follow two things: Freedom to find the pursuit of happiness and Natural Rights.
If a man and a man get hitched, what are we to say it's wrong? They're people too and if they say it's right, their word is just as good as ours.
Also, why do they need gay rights? It's called HUMAN RIGHTS, and everybody is entitled to them...Gays aren't "special" to have their own set of rights, they're fully functioning, normal human beings. Giving them their own rights will just alienate them, and that's something that'll contribute more to homophobia.
Really stupid comments tend to be down voted on this site.
Let me get this straight: You don't like it when you're alienated for your belief that gays shouldn't be accepted as normal and okay? In other words, you don't like being alienated for your belief that it's okay to alienate others. Huh.
You clearly don't know what "oppressed" means. He was being sarcastic.
i'm gay and recently i was told by someone i don't even know that i was 'impure', 'filthy' and that me and 'my kind' should have been aborted
That really is so sad
@Beenthere : i love the way you explain it. :)
let me direct you to the "love button". I shall lead the way.
I don't think there was a love button in January 2010.
i work with 3rd graders at a public school. during gym we had them play a game that required them to hold hands.
I was shocked when the boys wouldn't hold boys hands cause thats "gay" and boys wouldn't hold girls hands cause thats "gay"(?)
These kids are 8 years old and they're using gay in a derogatory manner. When I was 8 I didn't know what gay was. There is allot to be said about the parents reflected views of homosexualality. And this is NYC of all places, we just passsed a gay marriage bill. I'm not gay,but it was surprising to see how things like racism or homophobia can be passed on to children.
needless to say the game was a complete failure so we played duck duck goose. hands cause thats "gay" and boys wouldn't hold girls hands cause thats "gay"(?)
needless to say the game was a complete failure so we
You said the same thing twice..But aside from that it's very sad that kids think that way. I've seen it first hand from some of my little sister's friends. One time my 11 year old sister's friend was over and they were looking at her iPod. All I heard was "Ew, you listen to them? They're gay. That song is so gay." Kids don't know what gay means and just use it to mean bad, implying that being gay is bad BEFORE THEY EVEN KNOW WHAT GAY IS. Sorry for that caps rage. These things just make me angry.
Who cares, an eight year old literaly can't grasp abstract concepts like love or sexuality. If they were 13+ then you'd have a problem
They cannot understand sexuality, but they can understand that their classmates use gay as an insult so being gay must be bad. Once they find out what being gay really is they automatically connect it to being bad.
makes sense, hopefully it's something they'll grow out of but then again, people will say things other people say without knowing it's meaning
Using gay as a derogatory term is not bad. Think about it - stupid means mentally challenged, lame means physically disabled, dumb means an inability to speak. They're all fine to use.
I think gay people are awesome. They have the courage to be different without caring what other people think about it. I think they're brave and i admire them for it
Courage to be different? Being gay doesn't take courage. Coming out does.
Also, I'm just you're average college student with a minimum wage part time job who is still mooching off her parents. That doesn't seem very different to me.
what does your college thing have to do with it? and the coming out part is what i meant. The gay people who are open about it and try to get married and stuff are the people i admire. They go against everyone's beliefs to do what they want
My college thing was about how even though I'm gay, I'm not different. It's the people who make a big deal about it that make being gay seem so different. It's the same as being straight. We do not want to be seen as different, we want to be seen as the same.
I worded it wrong but err i think they're great because they believe in themselves and their sexuality
I honestly didn't think this was about gay rights at first... I just thought it was about why we can't have peace in places like the middle east...
I'm getting tired of these posts where the op thinks they're somehow better than everyone else so they sit on their thrones and judge society saying how something is sad or how somethings wrong with society just cause they don't agree with it. You may not like it but it's happening so get off your high horse and deal with it
I think all he's trying to say is that actions speak louder than words, if you want things to change rather than shaking your head and saying "thats wrong" before walking away, actually talk to the person and get them to stop- of course you'll have to explain why too, no one likes being told what to do, especially without reason.
but to say there's something wrong with society is to say that you're not a part of it, that you're somehow above it all. It just sounds really arrogant
Just one more time please. I think I missed it.
sry, stupid tablet. Opera mini isn't helping either but I think I've found a solution throws tablet out window
HAHAHAHA OMG I'M DYING OF LAUGHTER THAT WAS SO FUNNY LOLOL
Because it sounds like they feel they have the clarity to see problems others don't. "Society's" problems are like math problems, sitting around talking about it won't solve it. If you have a problem with it, do something
What you're saying isn't making much sense to me. If problems in society were never vocalized, people wouldn't see them as a big deal. As Loagn said, talking about the problem is the first step towards solving it. It's never a good idea to try to solve a tough problem by acting out blindly; discussing the best course of action leads to better results.
Martin Luther King Jr. spoke up about problems in society. Are you saying that he didn't do any good through the power of speech alone?
Martin Luther King Jr. held rallies, gave speeches, and ultimately died for his cause. This isn't speaking up, on amirite post like these are a dime a dozen.
BTW, telling a black guy about Martin Luther King Jr. would be like telling me how to play Portal
Let's break it down here, shall we?
You said, exactly: "but to say there's something wrong with society is to say that you're not a part of it, that you're somehow above it all. It just sounds really arrogant."
What did Martin Luther King Jr. do, in essence? He spoke up against the problems in society. Was that arrogant of him?
The principles are the same. Does it matter where you speak up against a cause? Is this not a site for opinions and ideas? You were saying people shouldn't speak about society's problems. Now you're saying that you should only speak up if you have the means to ignite a rally. I, personally, am not going to limit where and when I can speak up.
Asking someone to do that, truly, is ignorance of American values.
BTW, I also have no idea what you're going on about there. I was just bringing King up as an example, not teaching about the guy.
Dude this was a looooooong time ago, forget it
Dude, you made the initial comment two days ago.
But as 'forget it' is widely recognized as a gesture of defeat in denial, I will graciously accept victory
I'm going to put aside the insane number of repeats 'cause I find the ignorance of your comment more concerning.
So, to be part of society, you have to say everything is all right with it? Do you just go through life ignoring the bad? If everyone did that, nothing would ever change for the better.
I didn't say there was something wrong with it i said it sounds arrogant
OH MY GOD WHO THE HELL CARES.
It should be illegal for two men to hold hands under any circumstance.
Read your Bibles.
obvious troll is obvious.
I think you mean my bible.
My Bibles? Is that like the Quran and the more standard set of religous books in which basically promotes incest? Yeah lets turn to them for advice
Yep. I'm going out on a limb here, but i'm pretty sure Eve got fucked by anything and anyone, including her own sons. But if you can prove otherwise, then go ahead :), including her own sons. But if you can prove otherwise, then go ahead :)
Nope, i'm just a atheist, i've never actually took the time to read the bible, or any of it's sequels, so anything i say is basically ignorence and garbled nonsense. If i said anything rude or disrespectful to the religion in question, i really didn't mean to.
apparently i missed the joke....
im not against gays, but its really weird
It bugs me when people say that. You say you're not against it, you're fine with it, then you go on to alienate them anyways.
I think what she/he meant was that it's fine to be pro-gay, but you don't necessarily want to see them making out in public or something. But, I don't think it's homophobic because personally, I don't want anybody gettin' frisky in public, be it gay/straight or any variation upon.
I am totally for gay rights and think there is nothing wrong with being gay. But when I see two guys going at it, it is more disconcerting to watch than a guy and a girl going at it. Maybe it's because i can personally relate to the guy/girl match and not the guy/guy match?
When I see two people making out in public, I find it quite awkward, no matter their sex or sexual preference.
As a girl, I can say I find it kinda hot......
Frankly, I don't want to see anyone "going at it." Neither bothers me more than the other though. Some PDA is cute, like hand holding and cheek kisses. But I don't wanna see anyone's tongue in anyone's mouth, regardless of their gender.
Yeah, I''d probably have to agree with you and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
id rather see two men holding guns as long as there hunting lol
not funny. thats the reason why there is such an issue over gay rights, cause people like you think it's funny.
stfu! lol, there's not an issue over gay rights bc some people think it's funny! the issue is all the people who believe it's wrong!! stop being so stupid all the time anon!
I'll go ahead and say it. I am more content seeing me holding guns than holding hands, because, quite frankly, I'm really turned off when I see two guys dating or PDAing. It's not that I'm homophobic, but maybe it's because I'm a girl and it's totally fascinating to me when someone completely rejects my gender as a whole.
(Samantha Jane): 'I'm not homophobic but really I am'
Homophobic = The fear of gay people. You can dislike or alienate gay people without being afraid of them.
The "phobic" in homophobic isn't using it in the traditional way that means "fear of", it's using it in the same way as "xenophobic", where the phobic means a dislike or prejudice towards.
Xonophobic = Fear of strangers. It's actually just a pet peeve of mine it hurts the etymologist inside of me to hear that homophobic means hating queers. I know the words have broader definitions than that.
Why are you bringing Xonophobia into this? He said Xenophobia.
Obviously meant Xenophobia. No clue what xonophobia is
No, that is the definition of homophobic in the most simple terms, It can also mean prejudice and discrimination of gay people.
citing wikipedia as your first source..lol, scholarly!
Personally, I'm pro-gay marriage and for equal rights and everything but, I respect OP's opinion. Just because somebody doesn't necessarily agree with you doesn't give you a right to bash them for it. Otherwise, you're no different than any other intolerant d-bag,
Yes they are entitled to their own opinion, I didn't bash them, I was just pointing out that they said they weren't homophobic, then went on to say a homophobic statement.
I don't actually think it was a homophobic statement I think it was an opinion. I think a homophobic statement would be, "All fags burn in hell!!!" or something to that effect. .
I don't agree. 'All fags burn in hell!!!' would be an extreme homophobic statement, but that doesn't mean that more subtle discrimination isn't homophobic.
For example, what if I said that I'm turned off when I see black people in public? Would that not be discriminatory?
Well that's not discriminatory. That would just be how you work. It's not like you would hate black people, or think them lesser, you just would be turned off by them. That's not something you can control.
So you don't think black people are hot, that makes you racist? What?
I responded to Tempest Trance's example in his/her comment that said
"For example, what if I said that I'm turned off when I see black people in public? Would that not be discriminatory?"
By saying "Well that's not discriminatory. That would just be how you work. It's not like you would hate black people, or think them lesser, you just would be turned off by them. That's not something you can control."
You disagreed, by saying "And what does it mean to be "turned off" by someone? "Turned off" is an idiom."
My most recent response was "So you don't think black people are hot, that makes you racist? What?"
What I'm saying is that you can't control whether or not you find black people attractive, that's like saying you hate women because you're gay.
I'm not sure if you just responded to the wrong person or something.
Ah. I just assumed Tempest meant turned off as in "they're not attractive" since that's the most common usage. In the case of "they just bother me" it would be discriminatory, but not in "they're not attractive." Do you agree?
Ok, racism and homosexuality are not the same thing. And, certain people because of their religious beliefs do not agree with homosexuality. They don't think gays are horrible people, they just don't agree. And, I find it very amusing that now, people believe anybody who doesn't agree with them on the gay issue is "intolerant" because that is a very intolerant statement. Personally, I don't care that much. I'm just sick of people comparing homosexuality to racism or sexism. They're not the same thing.
Oh, I apologize, that is what I meant. Yeah, I'm not entirely sure that everybody who is gay was born that way. And no, I can't prove they're not the same thing, but you cannot prove they are. Annnnd, before anybody gets super pissed, I wasn't trying to say anything against gays. Several of my friends are gay and I have no problem with it. However, I also know people who do disagree and they attend extremely liberal schools and everybody gets furious at them for disagreeing. I have no problem with gay marriage or gay rights, but for my friends who do, they are entitled to their opinion. And I don't understand why people care so much about the opinions of others. You can't change their mind just by the force of your will, so why try? I think it has gotten to the point where in extremely liberal environments*ahem, people have hate flung at them for disagreeing. Isn't the point everyone is trying to make is NOT to discriminate. Feel free to disagree, that's just what i think.
I don't think it is wrong and I think natural would hold the connotation of being normal and I don't believe there is such a thing as normal. My mother has basically, told me if I married a woman she's not sure if she would go. I'm not actually gay, but I was still offended. Anyway, I can't really understand how suckish it would be to be told that. Sorry if I offended you, but yeah that was the point I was trying to make which I why I dislike extreme liberals just as much as extreme conservatives. What with the media highly publicizing gay rights, I believe it won't be too long where a lot more states will accept gay marriage. When that happens, I just want people to remember to treat those that disagree, fairly because unless they do or believe something radically, you can't fault somebody for sticking to their beliefs.
Well then if I was bashing them wouldn't I have said something like "omfg you ignorant idiot how could you say that?!?!11? I hope you get run over by a manure truck!!!2!11" It is a homophobic statement if they have a negative attitude towards a gay relationship, it doesn't have to be extreme as wanting all gay people to die and suffer for eternity.
DON'T DOWNVOTE THE ASEXUAL ANONYMOUS FOR BEING TRUTHFUL
Straight girls reject your gender as a whole. You aren't fascinated by them. At least I'm assuming that from your disgust of homosexuals. Unless you are one and just won't admit it.
