Maybe it's just George Lucas creating a tale based on the stories he's heard from that universe and bringing it here, translating it to English to make it more digestable for our audiences. Basically Lucas is a jedi sympathiser.

There used to be latin alphabet in the original trilogy. It was replaced somewhen down the line.. 1999 or something.

If they don't know the letters X and Y they also can't get the similarities in the looks of their starfighters and those letters.

Galactic basic doesn't use the symbols we do in the alphabet so "X" or "Y" as a shape wouldn't exist or at least they wouldn't be called X or Y
