Not really. It is just a less common way and hasn't *yet* gained the negative connotation 'fat' has.

I think of 'heavyset' as being bulky (like a football player), and 'fat' as more bulbous and soft.

Fat as in obese, then yes. But then overweight/overfat people have been called fat (myself included). I think overweight/overfat people are more chubby than fat. Obese people are definitely fat. But then there's obese people that may be fat, but have a shite ton of muscle, like a powerlifter or something. [IMAGE:108963]
