Every genre has its standard chord changes. Even Mozart and Beethoven had ending cadences that are formulaic.

Interesting take, but I'd have to disagree. Most pop songs are 4/4 at about 120 bpm, but that doesn't mean taking the vocals of one song will blend nicely with the instrumental of another.
