They are saying "backwards" spelled "backwards" is "backwards". They are just saying if you spell the word correctly it is the word. If abc is spelt abc then it's abc.

Yes you're right. It's dumb. But because the word is "backwards" the added layer is the wordplay that doesn't exist for other words.
