Even though literally every seed in March Madness has won a first-round matchup at least once (i.e. a 16-seed beating a 1-seed, a 15-seed beating a 2-seed, etc.), most people still expect the higher-seeded team to win. amirite?

Because that's how seeding works.

Yeah, but given how many upsets there are in a given March Madness tournament, you'd think people would be less likely to not give the lower seeds a chance.

There's always upsets but the vast majority of the time, the higher seed wins, especially in the first round. A 16 seed has only beaten a 1 seed once in history. So really, it would be kinda dumb to bet on a 16 seed.

I will say though, a 12 seed almost always beats a 5 seed but that's just one of those weird things about March Madness.

Oh, I agree it's dumb to bet on a 16 seed. I'm just saying treating it like a guaranteed victory is dumb.

Well, treating any one side in a sporting event as a guarantee is dumb. That's why they have odds. But over large sample sizes, the favourites always win more often. That's why people bet on them.

Yeah because the higher seeds win more often and usually have a better record coming into the tournament?
