He just didn't want his guests to be greedy. If you have a dinner party, and one guest hogs all the wine, are you a good host for letting them do it? I think you would be a better host if you made people have only their fair share, surely

I'm happy for friends and family to eat me out of house and home. I've been down on my luck in months gone by, and friends offered me a seat by their hearth and wine from their cellar. I suppose I'm just happy I can return the favour now.
