They had the freezing and boiling points of water for calibration purposes, as they do today for ordinary thermometers.

Freezing and boiling. are near absolutes. depending on sea level I think. The rest... and the inbetween.. that's all fractals, divisions, and hell to think about.

Ice is a state...3 dimensional , maybe temp is a 4th...how do u know it all freezes at the same temp without a termomitor
