If Monsters Inc and Toy Story took place in a shared universe the toys would have stayed up all night defending their children from the scary monsters. amirite?

nah they have an agreement, the monsters pay them 10,000 bucks every month for them to not interfere with their work

The whole "children's toys are toxic" plot line is an elaborate lie perpetuated by the toys so the monsters won't kidnap them

Plot twist: they are the same universe, and your toys don't want to protect you.

I think you'll find it is the same. At the end of monsters Inc, Boo gives Sully a Jessie doll from toy story 2.
Source: just watched this with my daughter twice in 1 day.

Then why aren't we shown the toys protecting the kids? You know Woody wouldn't be lettering Andy get scared at night.

We aren't really shown inside any room except boo's, everything else is inferred so maybe they are and we don't see it.

Since toys thrive on playing and monsters feed on screams, they would be competing for kids' attention.

Imagine the story arc when the monsters go from being the enemies who scare the children to the allies who try to make them laugh all the time.
