Why is it "an" if the word doesn't start with a vowel?

It's because the letter N does start with a vowel when you say it out loud. NPC is just saying three separate letters, instead of a word on it's own. A normal house An NPC A hotel, but also: An hour (h is silent) It's basic grammar, yet very difficult for most foreigners. Hell, even native English speakers make this mistake a lot.
