+118 Every basketball shot will go in if thrown from the right place, amirite?

Science, mathematics and you miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

This feels wrong. You don't miss 100% of the shots you don't take because you didn't take those shots. Missing a shot implies your projectile deviated from the intended trajectory and didn't reach the goal. But if there is no intended trajectory, there is nothing to miss. Not to forget, most of the missed shots have different results than shots not taken.

Not true. The way you shoot it is a bigger factor. A bad shot will always miss no matter were your standing.

Actually you're wrong, all parabolas are similar. A bad shot from the correct height and angle can always be put into the basket.

Then it wouldn't be a bad shot then. If u screw up the angle regardless of where ur shooting from it will miss. Maybe it hits the rim causing it to bounce out of the basket. I will agree that a ball drop from directly above the basket would be a hard shot to miss.

What are you talking about? What do you think OP means by "shooting from the right place"? This is mathematically fixing a trajectory and using the initial point as a variable. Literally no matter what angle you shoot it at, due to gravity, its trajectory will eventually be pointing almost straight down, and can be solved to go into the basket at that theoretical point in time (assuming you are not strong enough to throw the ball into orbit). Throw it straight horizontal at high speed from the free throw line and it'll go out of court and never come near the basket. Fix the trajectory and take the exact same shot from up in the stands and it'll land because its angle will be pointing at least as far down as the angle of literally any shot ever made, after the right amount of time. Its path is always a parabola. All parabolas are similar. Why are sports simpletons unable to think mathematically?

Who said you have to be standing?

by Anonymous 2 years ago

I just assumed they weren't shooting from a wheelchair. It is a possibility tho.

by Anonymous 2 years ago

They could throw it from helicopter for that matter.

by Anonymous 2 years ago

Seems like a overly complicated way to make a basket but they could be in a helicopter.

whoa

And the glass half empty version. Every basketball shot will miss if thrown from the wrong place.

by Anonymous 2 years ago

So in general, everything will happen if the circumstances are right.

by Anonymous 2 years ago

Not if the place from which you would have to take your shot requires the backboard (or other basket-supporting structure) not to be there.
