If an asteroid actually wipes out humanity, with 7 billion+ people on Earth it's quite likely that at the moment of impact someone will be saying "It's not the end of the world". amirite?

Technically it wouldn't be, the World will still be around, spinning and doing its thing… it's the life forms living on it that will have a very VERY bad day. Remember this rock has had at least 5 other mass extinction level events before we popped up on this planet (one being similar to the event you described). It will be just fine.

Earth has a severe case of Humanity. Take 2 asteroids and call me in the morning. Minor side-effects may be fever, chills, 1000 years of volcanic activity and severe weather.

The earth could be the asteroid crashing into a different planet. We're moving forward all the time.

It's a fail-safe answer.

If he's wrong, and it IS the end of the world, there will be no one around to chide him for being wrong.

And if he's right, then the survivors will praise him for having been right.
