Well think about it. Whales need to take a breath at least once an hour. If something is afflicting them so they can't surface, then they'll ultimately die from drowning.

The easiest way to prove or disprove something is proof by contradiction. basicly one occasion where what you say is false.
So what happens if a whale accidently goes upshore somehows (by high tides or by humans or whatever), then how does it die?
Answer: not from lack of air, but lack of water! (or food if he starves befoe being dehytrated)

It is very rare for marine mammals to drown. In turn though, they can suffocate to death.

No, this is untrue. As far as I'm aware most whales die when they desist living. Then again I may stand corrected.
