Not necessarily, a relationship might be perfect for a phase in one's life and people can grow apart, develop different desires to follow different paths.

Having a fulfilling relationship that ends with mutual understanding and respect is still a successful relationship in my book.

You're not wrong, and examining my actions in many failed relationships has allowed me to grow as a person.
