At age 50 you get $50 and then at 2% inflation $50 x 1.02 = $51 by your 51st birthday your present has the same buying power as your previous present. Then at 52 you get $52 but your previous present of $51 would have been worth $52.02 by that time and the divide only gets bigger from there.
