I'm surrounded by people who speak the only language I know, and I can ignore them perfectly fine. I doubt anything would change if there were more languages involved.

Where I live people generally speak one of two languages so after those two it makes no difference how many you know

A little bit of hearing loss makes it a lot easier. Unless I'm concentrating on what you're saying, it's just background noise. Even if I am concentrating on what you're saying, it still has a good chance of being background noise.
