This really isn't true. As each country teaches their own history, they'll each tell their own version whether they lost or won. This applied in old wars, where defeat usually involved some level of annihilation.

Civil wars. The winning side establishes what is told in school. Spain for instance. People still believe fascist dictator Franco was the best that happened to the country.
