I think op is saying more like "mid-night" (middle night - based on nighttime / dark hours).

Yup! Midday is typically a range of hours, but midnight is labeled as a specific time.

This varies not only by latitude but also by time of year at that latitude. There is no single "mid-night" as the length of night changes and will be different at different parts of the world.

Valid point. There is no night for parts of the world for weeks, and as such there is no middle, further arguing that mid-night is not at 12a.
