+117 Kinda weird that there isn't just free drinking water everywhere. amirite?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

In Las Vegas, NV, where I live and a lot of places with similar climates, it's illegal to refuse someone drinking water.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

How you holding up with the current temps?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Escaping them in Hawaii

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Dude the fact you escape the heat of Nevada by going to Hawaii makes me envious as I'm sat here in Scotland with no where to go in really bad temperatures.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You can also go to Hawaii

by Anonymous 1 year ago

The issue there is, A) applying for a visa and B) money, i wish I could, escape this dreadful weather 😂.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

No US visa required for citizens of the UK

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Is there not? I swear there was

by Anonymous 1 year ago

i think you need to do the online esta application that costs 10 bucks or something like that. its fairly simple then all you have to do is take a casual 24hr flight for roughly £2k. Super easy barely an inconvenience.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Yeah no that kinda money isn't doable unfortunately

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Going on vacation/holiday is TIGHT.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

At worst, you'd need to apply for an ESTA, which includes filling out a form and paying maybe a $7 fee. You can afford that, huh?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Wait, bad temperatures in Scotland?!

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Yeah sat in here in Glasgow with 40mph winds with the rain hammering it down........ getting my fishing gear sorted.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Same goes for the entire US lol.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

In my US city we have public drinking fountains all over the place.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

But! They can charge you for the cup or the service of filling up your own.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Not in any city or state I've lived in.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Can you cite the law or an article about this please

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Why do I need to cite a law? No city or state I've lived in charges for water cups. Not in any restaurant I've ever gone to, even the ones that don't have a liquor license.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I'm interested to see if it's just courtesy or law.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

They usually have special, small, these are for water only people cups and it's free. :D Not sure if it's a law though.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

And why am I supposed to help you with that? Sounds like you should find out yourself.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Maybe they technically could, but I have never had that happen. To the best of my knowledge, I have never been charged for a cup of water or for filling up my own in the US.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Reminds me of an old story from the Middle Eastern deserts. It was punishable by death to refuse a man in the desert water if he asked for it. It was also punishable by death for a man to steal water from another in the desert. So the old man at the oasis would hide. The travelers who found him there would always ask him for water and could not be refused. But if the travelers came and took water from the oasis without asking, the old man would kill the thieves. Thmoral of the story is that everything is life or death in the desert, even a polite question.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

No, it isn't, not there or anywhere else in the US. That's a complete myth.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Yeah the law doesn't apply to every place, only to restaurants that serve food, they have to provide free tap water.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Wherever there's free drinking water that's not at home it tastes like spit.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

One of the earliest Latin texts still studied is a guy complaining about having to pay for water in a town he passed through. Some things never change

by Anonymous 1 year ago

What's it called

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Capitalism.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Nestlé

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Fun fact: Nestlé was named after this very town: Nestlë, Rome. The company name alludes to this story and this is made up!

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Source/name?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Most fast food restaurants will give you a free cup of ice water.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Not in my country. Refills are free. But they charge the water at least the first time

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Might as well get a Coke at that point.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Water is cheaper here lol

by Anonymous 1 year ago

As it is in most places.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

120 calories vs 0...

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I know there are fountains other places, but when I was in Rome I remember seeing some random water fountains/springs. It was really awesome.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

They're all over Italy.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Isn't that common everywhere? In Spain is quite common, I know of probably at least 4 public water fountains at less that 10 minutes waking from my home.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Not at all any place in the US i've visited, and I've been to most major cities and 40/50 states. Its more common in some cities but its still kindof rare.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Especially since Covid started a ton of municipalities used the virus as an excuse to shut all the public fountains down. Weird that even when the scientific consensus found that transfers through objects were minimal the fountains remained closed. I think it has more to do with saving money on the maintenance on them than anything else.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I drank out of one there and didn't die lol

by Anonymous 1 year ago

They are specifically made to be potable water so I would hope not! They even have some fountains with sparkling water.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

In the UK, every establishment with an alcohol license (bars, restaurants, cafes etc) legally has to provide drinking water.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

In London (and probably elsewhere if anyone can confirm?) you can use the app Refill to find free water throughout the city.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Wait, where are you? In BC there's fountains everywhere.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Some places shut off their fountains because of the pandemic

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Or you could just open your mouth and look up.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

That back fired on me once. Big time.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

If it got fired onto your back I don't see what the problem is

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Used to be a water fountain in nearly every business but people kept putting their lips on the spout, this is why we can't have nice free water

by Anonymous 1 year ago

wtf, why would you do that lmao

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You don't question stupidity.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

There are some disgusting people out there.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I always avoid drinking from them cause I had a feeling that some people do this. Now it's confirmed.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

There used to be water fountains just about everywhere. Damnit, I'm old enough to qualify every statement with "In my day..."

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Yup. Why I remember gettin' free water at the fillin' station. Just had to walk up and ask. Btw, get off my lawn.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I get what you mean. I'm basically a (slightly) younger version of the old geezer waving his cane and shouting at the neighborhood kids.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Same

by Anonymous 1 year ago

There kind of is. Most public land/parks/buildings have drinking fountains, the vast majority of fast food restaurants will give you water for free, most random people in general will give you water if they have any and you ask for it. At least this is the US.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

We have water fountains where I live. And it's the law (in California) that gas stations have to provide free water and air (and tire pressure gauges) for people that need, well water or air.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

"I can't breath in here!" "Need air? I'm sorry, that will cost you extra."

by Anonymous 1 year ago

*breathe

by Anonymous 1 year ago

There is though? In some hotter states it's illegal to refuse someone water, and in every state there's water fountains and stuff.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

In Bangalore, India.. we have government installed automated water booths, that filters the water and we get 20 liters for 5 rupees ( that's 0.064 USD! ) I know it's not free but that's really helped a lot of people. This actually led to healthier street food too as vendors grab the clean water from these booths for cooking.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

There's free drinking water in the US

by Anonymous 1 year ago

It's mostly safe in England and Germany.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

It's called a water fountain, or a bubbler if you're werid

by Anonymous 1 year ago

In AZ it's illegal to decline a free water to someone🤷‍♂️

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Not sure about other countries but in England EVERY restaurant/café/food based establishment will serve you as many cups of tap water as you want for free.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Ummmm, Water fountain?? And in the U.S all restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, etc hare all required by law to provide free drinking water to anyone.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

There used to be fountains all over. But there gross

by Anonymous 1 year ago

America Chavez said food was free in most universes

by Anonymous 1 year ago

There is. Except for deserts, it just comes falling out of the sky!

by Anonymous 1 year ago

There used to be this thing called water fountains which was free public drinking water.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Most places need to provide it if asked. And here jn portland we got the bubblers outside!

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Kinda weird you don't know drinking fountains exist, or that you could easily get water from any public sink or spigot on the side of a building literally anywhere.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Wait until OP hears about water fountains

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Water fountains: am I a joke to you?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

When I worked at the Ryder Cup, the world's biggest golf event, they had *nothing* for free. You had to buy *everything* except the ability to use the outhouses. It was seen as very stuck-up, in-line with golf's reputation. Can't even offer water.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

There is

by Anonymous 1 year ago

There is if you want to get a bucket and walk down to any source of water. Example a puddle. But you'll probably get sick. Water that won't make you sick isn't free because it take work to make water safe.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Idk where you are but in America there's free water everywhere

by Anonymous 1 year ago

i don't know why you expect people in power to want to innately help people without any gain on their end.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Can't just drink most water, even fresh water straight out of the source. Most needs to be filter for diseases.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Around here (BC) drinking from a stream or river is a pretty safe bet. Probably >99/100. Done it many times and have never gotten sick.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Not everywhere though. Giardia is a real threat in a lot of places.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Free drinking water is what Bubblers were made for! In Wisconsin I never really had trouble finding them around. Very scarce though here in Berlin, Germany.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

It's because outside of Wisconsin peopel cal then water foundtains. Only Minnesota and Wisconsin have bublers

by Anonymous 1 year ago

In the US if you serve hot food like restaurants you must give out free water.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

everyone everywhere deserves free access to food and water, and no one should die because they can't afford to live. according to some folks, believing this makes you some kind of terrifying radical who wants the world to burn.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Plenty of free drinking water if you dont mind the risk of microorganisms. The stuff you pay for is premium. Its just that a lot of people take the premium for granted.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Why? It costs money to treat water and deliver it.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Nestle has entered the chat, aggressively

by Anonymous 1 year ago

They're called water fountains, have you never left your house?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Tap water is free almost everywhere. Where do you live ? Now, what's truly messed up? That insulin is not free, anywhere.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

There are still a decent amount of drinking fountains around

by Anonymous 1 year ago

They used to be much more common. Now when I see them they usually don't work.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I think you should talk to Disney world.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

what is a drinking fountain?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You can thank capitalism and Nestle for that

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Talk to Nestle

by Anonymous 1 year ago

The first guy to charge people to use his well must've been a real douchebag. That's assuming he didn't get clarted over the head for it

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You are now on nestle's watch list

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Africa would love this

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I guess it's to prevent people from wasting it? or just money greed idk

by Anonymous 1 year ago
