+138 One of worst thing that can happen to you in a debate, is that you a agree with your opponents arguments. amirite?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Not if it means you realized you were mistaken and learned something. Maybe you've learned someone's point of view that you had never before considered.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

That's right, but the problem is that people will just not accept that you changed your mind. they'll just use that to make fun of you now.

Well, maybe they were making fun of you before

I'd say it's being utterly convinced of your incorrect position.

That depends if you are debating as competition, or as a way of trying to discuss actual issues. The problem with so many debates is they are setup and operated more as a sport than productive conversation.

And because of the sport, I see the inconsistencies that become "rude" when I point out that the argument is not valid for "XYZ" reasons. All the time I am witness to statements that, "Eh, that argument way does not say what you think it says." But I become the asshole for pointing that out. Ignoring that it is an AH move to make an argument using "false" statements.

I would think the worse thing would be the platform or ceiling collapsing would be worse. Many times agreeing with an opponent is a good lay up to pointing out the short coming of their logic: " I agree that xyz is trues until you look at abc...etc".

Indeed it is the worst thing if your goal is to win a debate, but if your goal is to come to a better understanding of whatever it is you're debating, it's an epic win for everybody.

There are two types of people in this world: people who see debating as a mental UFC fight and people who want either party to become wiser, whichever party that ends up being.

That's just called losing the debate, this must always be an option you are open to, otherwise you're not actually interested in debating or having a debate.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

That is one of the single best outcomes, that means you came in open minded and ready to listen to your debate partner and what they have to say, and found that you may have been either incorrect, or that you found their side to be more in line with what you expect the relative truth to be, or you learned something. That's just called growth and it's one of the greatest things you can do as an individual.

"Winning" a debate should never be your goal, it's a hugely flawed logic. The point of a debate should be to discuss your viewpoints and accept the most logical one. There's no shame if your viewpoint is less logical, it simply means you considered different factors and you can be corrected on the mistake.

I mean debate as in you don't get to necessarily get choose your position.

Like a school debate kind of?

Competitive debate is a blight for exactly this reason. People shouldn't be taught that being convinced of a better position is a failure.
