+152 Hackers will pose as a threat if teleportation is invented, amirite?

by Anonymous 2 years ago

It's not gonna be the real you coming out on the other side anyway 🤷‍♂️

by Anonymous 2 years ago

What is the real you anyway? Hypothetically as long as each molecule is arranged in the same order you will look and feel exactly the same. The more fun part of the question is what happens to the old you?

by Anonymous 2 years ago

Yeah exactly. The definition of "you" is always changing, but with teleportation you're basically creating a different instance of the definition at a specific point in time, in a different place. We don't know how consciousness really works, but my "bet" is that the original one would "die", although this would be probably impossible to verify.

My feelings/beliefs on Star Trek's transporter in a nutshell. I'm me, but once I'm deconstructed... Someone else who is me will return. But I won't be aware of that. Probably. Maybe...

Yeah, and it'll be easy to clone people by hacking or just bugs.

So if there's a teleportation machine that makes an exact atom for atom replica for you in another location but doesn't destroy the original you. Which one is the real you?

by Anonymous 2 years ago

Exactly

by Anonymous 2 years ago

Depends on the type of teleporter we're talking about. If we're talking atomic reconstruction type teleporters then no, it's not going to be you. If we're talking about a type of teleporter that transports you to a different location via folding space or wormholes then it would be.

Thats an open philosophical question, similar to the ship of theseus

Perception of self defines you as you.

I was more thinking it would be like Harry yelling DiAg'nElle in the floo powder scene in Chamber of Secrets and ending up far away from the intended location

They already pose a threat for many reasons, this would be no different.

Id think they could only redirect you to a place that can reform you, as you are breaking down all the molecules and then perfectly reforming them, and thats going to need some sort of machine at the recieving location. Sending you to the Sun would simply amount to disentegrating you and tossing your atoms into space in the direction of the Sun. Would be the best way to get rid of body and make sure no one finds it though.

imagine hackers hacking the teleporter to mars and when elon musk teleports back to earth he zaps in as a still-barely-conscious liquefied organic slush
