Your example about the guy who spent his whole life in a job he hates, is pretty much the perfect example of why this saying is popular. Tons of people regret working a terrible job for so long. Who has ever said "I wish I never quit that terrible job. I ended up in an equally bad job." ? Asking someone out and getting rejected isn't fun, but it's not the sort of thing you regret 10 years later the way you might if you never asked. The whole thing isn't supposed to be telling you how to feel in the future, it's about spurring you to action now. Sure there's probably people wishing they never tried to rob that liquor store, but it's not a perfect rule.

I know some people who regret leaving a job they hated. Though it was mainly because they having missed consistent income or a higher standard of living. Grass is always greener

From what I've gathered, research in psychology has found people are more likely to view mistakes or missed opportunities resulting from their own deliberate actions positively than they are to view mistakes or missed opportunities resulting from inaction. So take that for what it's worth.

Because, hopefully you learn something from your mistakes. You learn less from the things you dont do.

Sounds like a typical excuse from impulsive buyers. They would say, it is better to buy it and regret it later than not buy it and regret it. So, they just keep dumping money on useless things.
