Me too. Same with holding doors. If I'm not close enough where it doesn't feel awkward or rushed I purposely hold back and act like I'm looking for something in my bag so they'll just go.

If you are far away it's super weird. How do they even know you want to go the same direction as them? But if I'm the distance away that I'd get to the elevator just in time for it to close in my face then I appreciate you holding it for me, especially if there isn't a row of elevators and another one will be here any second.
