Naw I think registries for babies still make sense. Earlier this year when my nephew was born, I bought my sister a diaper genie off of her registry. They're nice to have but you don't need six of them. I was able to see that it hadn't been bought yet without texting everyone under the sun asking if anyone had gotten one yet.
Registries have been around for a long time actually. Not always in retail. A common question back in the day was..... what colors do you want in the home? Another was....what's your china pattern?
Ah get over yourself. Giving gifts is a common practice for weddings and baby announcements. People are smart to recommend the kind of gifts they'd prefer receiving.
fwiw, I think it's so much better than other cultures that have monetary gifts as the norm. From the list of things in the registry, you pick one that best matches the gift you may be willing to buy!
I once was invited to some wedding, and it said "please no box gifts! Envelopes only!"
That blew my mind. I didnt go. I wasnt close to her, anyway
i can see why you wouldn't have one for a baby but if you don't have one for a wedding you might end up with 15 toasters and 15 kettles.
no one is forcing their guests to buy off the registry tho. if you don't like the idea do something else.

Did someone hold a gun to your head and make you buy a PS5 for a baby or something?

This is interesting. I'm curious as to why this was an issue?
